Not only can you turn your lights on in this overview, but you can also change their brightness and colors. When the electric bass kicks in, the Nest Hub again sounds a bit weak and underwhelming. The Echo Show remains the only smart display we've tested with a web browser. I found the Nest Hub’s audio surprisingly good for such a small display. Underworld's "Bruce Lee" sounds similarly treble-heavy, with the jangly guitar strums and vocals coming through prominently, but the rest of the track almost completely lacking any bass response. It's slightly louder than the Echo Spot, but it doesn't sound much better than your average clock radio.

You can always swipe right on the screen to go back a page, or swipe up for quick settings like volume and brightness. You can't download apps or browse the web as you could on an ordinary tablet, but all of the content of the Google Nest Hub is meant to be visible from across the room. You can watch YouTube on the Echo Show, but only via a browser, which doesn't respond to voice commands. The Home Hub is cheaper than most of the competition and gets much more than just the basics right. It’s more critical than ever before to ensure you wash your hands properly, especially with the pandemic continuing to spread. You simply say, “Hey Google, help me wash my hands,” and from there, it’ll play a tune for 20 seconds to encourage adequate time for washing hands.

That's likely because the display also tracks sound, light and respiratory rates. With all those environmental clues, the display gathered that I wasn't sleeping. In contrast to the large and flashy Echo Show and Lenovo Smart Display, the 7 x 4.5 x 2.7-inch Google Nest Hub is small and unobtrusive. It’s not ugly, but not beautiful either -- it blended so well into my countertop that dinner guests didn’t notice it. Ask for directions, for example, and you get a map on-screen showing you the route. As with the voice-only Google products, directions are also sent to your phone, too.

After a short pairing process you’ll need to select which room the Hub is located in as well as add any new smart devices you might have purchased alongside the Home Hub. Yes, Sleep Sensing is the shiny new feature on the second-gen Nest Hub, but that's not the whole story. When enabled, the Soli motion sensor basically creates an invisible, contactless tracking bubble around the person sleeping closest to the device. It can detect movements large and small—such as when you get up to use the bathroom, take a sip of water, roll over, or even breathe—all without a camera or requiring you to wear a separate device to bed. When Sleep Sensing is active, you'll see a little bed icon in the top right corner of the display.

Simply say "resume cooking" when you're ready and Google will go right back to where you left off in the recipe. It's a great feature that's ahead of Alexa's similar recipe feature on the Echo Show. Have recommendable 10-inch smart displays with Google Assistant built in and most of the same features as the Nest Hub. Arriving very recently, users can now watch all of their favorite Netflix shows and movies on Google’s smart displays. All you need to do is say, “Hey Google, open Netflix.” From there, you can choose what to watch. If there’s something specific, just say, “Hey Google, play Queer Eye” to start streaming instantly.

Watch Netflix shows and movies

Google Photos is also an integral part of the Google Home Hub, as it’s the only way to use the photo frame feature. It’s clear why Google is locking down its platform like this — it wants you using its services and hopefully paying for them in the longterm. However, it’s a bit disappointing for those who may be used to traditional digital photo frames, which provide microSD card slots, USB support and internal memory, and support other online storage platforms.

Quality smart home controls, integrated YouTube, and a brilliant use of the display to give access to some Google services, such as Maps and Photos make this model better than the Echo Show in some regards. Restrictive Google Account support and the inability to play Netflix restrict the appeal slightly. Google Assistant can answer questions about the weather, sports, and general information like unit conversions and word translations.

Setup and Google Assistant

There’s no webcam on this model, with Google deciding that it wanted privacy first and foremost, giving people the confidence to place the Home Hub wherever they wanted. Even better, they don’t need to be concerned about mom and dad dropping by anytime they have company over, and the device powers down nicely at night so that they can get some shuteye at the end of a busy day. Students, short on time and full of questions that need answering will love the Home Hub and its prominent focus on Google Calendar. It’s baked right into the main screen of the app and should always keep them on task. If there’s one that’s worth digging into, however, it’s YouTube, as it’s one of the Home Hub’s key services. While we could focus in on any number of these in-depth, trust us when we say that Google handles all of their first-party services with a level of tact and care that’s rare to find in a first-generation product.
